The Azores is a volcanic archipelago situated in the Atlantic Ocean 1300 Kms of the coast of Portugal. The surf in the Azores is consistent, powerful and uncrowded.

The Azores have plenty of uncrowded waves on offer but many are hard to get to. If you are considering a serious surfing vacation in the Azores then make sure you plan your car hire into the cost. The surf on the islands is both powerful, unexplored, sometimes dangerous and most of all uncrowded.

The Islands benefit from the East Gulf Stream which brings warm ocean water. The oceans temperature ranges from 17 Celsius in the winter to 25 Celsius in the summer. So in winter it is a good idea to have a 3.2 Steamer and for summer board shorts will be fine.

It is blessed with warm summer days, a unique culture, friendly people, medieval castles, cobblestone villages, captivating cities and golden beaches.

Water temps can get as low as 16 degrees in the winter and as high as 23 in summer. The colder months of winter tend to have bigger swells and the warmer months tend to be smaller. A 4.3 steamer for winter will keep you toasty and for summer boardies and sunscreen will be fine.

The Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are located 100 Kms off the cost of Morocco and are often referred to as Europe’s Hawaii. The Canaries are famous for there heavy and shallow reef breaks. The main islands are La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

The Canary Islands boast world class surf with something to suit all levels of surfer. Typically there are a lot of reef breaks with a few scattered beach breaks also. Unfortunately the islands are also plagued by north-easterly trade winds which can easily blow out the dominant north-westerly swells.

Water temperature varies from 22º C in summer to 19º C in winter. So you can get away with boardies and a rashie in Summer months and a 3.2 Steamer in the winter months. Also bring your surfing etiquette.

France is blessed with some of the best beach breaks in the world. In addition to this they have an amazing night life with world class cuisine and wine.

France does score consistent surf due to the low pressure systems coming from the north, and with plenty of world class beach breaks and reefs to choose from there is something here for everyone. Hossegor and Biarritz are the most well known spots which means they can get crowded in Summer, but due to the water temps in winter most spots are reasonably uncrowded.
